"The day has finally come!" James exclaims.
James and his friends, Stacy, Maci, Mark, and Kanm, have been chosen as the students of the year, and the reward comes with the special honor:a visit to Dr. Malachi's lab.
So as the 5 friends pack up, they discuss on what the experience would be like.
"I hope he has some unbreakable codes that need breaking!" exclaimed Mark.
"No, of COURSE not!" complained Maci. "There are always dark rooms in a mad scientist's lair!"
"It's a LABORATORY, not a lair!" corrected James.
"Then, if there is none of those things, then there should be bad guys, right?" asked Stacy.
"Sure, sure," mumbled Kanm.
"You can't fight bad guys!" exclaimed Stacy, shocked at what Kanm had said. "You're too small, and besides, you don't even know karate!"
I can't let them know that, Kanm thought.
By that time, the bus had come, and they drove away for their day.
2 hours later, the bus pulled into the laboratory garage and opened. They should have known that this would be the worst field trip of their lives.
"What can we do first?" asked Maci, when they got to the main lab.
"Ohhhhhhhh, who goes there?" asked the scientist, turning around.
"Can't you see us?" asked Stacy.
"No, I can't," sighed Dr. Malachi. "My vision is failing. And with it so dark, I can't see a thing!"
"Maci," ordered James. "Light-bulb."
Maci took one huge breath, and started glowing. Dr. Malachi screeched with joy. "The light is coming back!" he exclaimed. "I can see better now!"
He looked in the direction of the five younglings. "Now that I see you," he said, "you may go anywhere in the lab as you wish. But..." he turned around and faced another door. "...you must stay together as a group and---STAY OUT OF THAT ROOM!" he screamed, but then he passed out.
"You can stop glowing now, Maci," James said to Maci. She spit out the air and she returned to normal.
"Now, since there is no one here to tell us what to do," suggested James, "let's find out what the scientist was so worried about---and what's inside the room."
