Portal to Portals---The Beginning:Chapter 9

James groaned as he got up. After that crash he was out of shape.
Am I... dead? He walked around the destructed bridge they had crashed into.
Where are they? he wondered, as he staggered alongside the fallen pillars.
Then he saw his friends laying stretched out, lifeless.
     James wept.
But he didn't have much time to mourn. Because then, out of the corner of his eye, on the horizon, he saw a volcano, about to erupt, and the ground crackled beneath his feet.
And in the flowing lava, he saw two cloaked men, one on a tiny, saddled dragon, and one on a hideous monster, laughing evilly, and then out of the sea of lava, came all different kinds of soldiers, all surrounding them. They were so anonymous that James and even I couldn't describe what they looked like.
The soldiers struck James again and again, until James could not take it anymore. He fell down, and couldn't move or fight back.
Then the cloaked men walked up, and each one raised a dagger. They uttered some words, brought down the knifes, and

     "Wake up, James!" cried Stacy.
James immediately sprang open his eyes. He sighed with relief as he saw that the cloaked men, the soldiers, and the sea of lava were gone.
     "You passed out," explained Maci.
"Great, great!" shouted Kanm suddenly. Everyone is up. NOW they can hear my tale."
"What tale?" rasped a weak Mark, as he woke up.
"What I found in my hiding spot," he declared.
     Everybody stared.
"Oh, come on!?" he teased. "When we were in the crazy guy's lab?"
This time everyone nodded and thought about that horrible moment.
"Well," he started, "each of us had a hiding spot. Me? I was crammed into a drawer. Then, I felt something rough pushing on my butt---"
     The girls giggled.
"Please, just SHUT UP!?!?" he screamed.
     They stopped chattering.
"Thank you," he said in a calmer voice. "Now then, I will continue my story. That was so irritating! It was like how you get a bug bite and it drives you crazy. So I took it and it was a envelope! So I have kept it for safe keeping."
     He opened the envelope.
"What does it say?" asked James.
Kanm looked puzzled. "I can't read it," he said. "It looks like a secret code!"
